Owen Sound, Ontario – Wednesday, March 19, 2014 – The Tall Ship®Liana’s Ransom is returning to Owen Sound on Canada Day weekend, offering 90-minute excursions on Owen Sound Bay. The schooner Liana’s Ransom made its first visit to Owen Sound during the Tall Ships® 2013 event. Excursion tickets for that event sold out more than two weeks in advance, and are expected to sell out again for this visit. Tickets are currently available for five daily cruises on June 28, June 29, and July 1, with a special Canada Day Fireworks Cruise on July 1st at 9:00 p.m. Additional cruises may be added on June 30, depending on demand.

Liana’s Ransom is an 85-foot topsail schooner, based on vessels from the Golden Age of Sail. The crew dresses in period costume similar to the outfits worn by pirates and privateers of old. During the excursions, passengers are entertained by tales of pirate adventures, with crew members swinging on ropes over the water. Passengers even have the opportunity to fire the ship’s authentic scale model cannons.

In addition to online and in-person sales, tickets may also be purchased by calling the Roxy Theatre Box Office at 1-888-446-ROXY or locally at 519-371-2833.

Thousands Attend Tall Ships® Event in Owen Sound

Published on: Tuesday, August 20, 2013

TallshipsParade of SailOwen Sound, Ontario - Tuesday, August 20, 2013 : The tall ships sailed into Owen Sound this past weekend and over 10,000 people came out to see them along the city’s west harbour. The three-day event from Friday, August 16 to Sunday, August 18, featured the Pride of Baltimore II (sponsored by Investment Planning Counsel, Owen Sound), Playfair (sponsored by The Sydenham at Owen Sound), and Liana’s Ransom (sponsored by Parrish & Heimbecker).

Joining the other ships were the Wild Irish Rose, a sailing vessel based in Owen Sound, as well as the Cape Providence of the Canadian Coast Guard.

“It was great to see so many people from Owen Sound, and also all the visitors coming from across Ontario and beyond to be a part of this amazing event,” says Owen Sound Mayor Deborah Haswell. “Hosting the tall ships in our harbour certainly was the perfect way to showcase what we have to offer here in the Scenic City.”

Along with deck tours on two of the ships, over a thousand people had the opportunity to enjoy a 90-minute excursion on Liana’s Ransom. Event boarding passes were sold out last Wednesday afternoon. Liana’s Ransom excursion tickets sold out in mid July. Thousands also came down to look at the ships from a great vantage point along the east harbour wall.

The highlight for many was the Parade of Sail on Sunday afternoon. The sunny blue skies made for the perfect backdrop as all the ships sailed out of the harbour. The Owen Sound Fire Service provided a stunning display projecting water over the ships as they sailed by.

Thousands also enjoyed the numerous free activities including live music, children’s activities, food, and the Harbour Market. Many of the artisans on site also sold unique works with tall ship-related themes. The Harbour Stage tent was also a big hit featuring Summerfolk performers.

Event organizers were thrilled by the response to the event and will be compiling a full report for Owen Sound City Council about the event and the opportunity for a similar event in the future.
